Banner Ad CTR Hits All Time Low

Research from AdTech, a global provider of ad serving technology has revealed that just 2 out of 1000 banner impressions get clicked on by European web users. The current CTR of 0.18% has been steadily declining from 0.33% since AdTech first started measuring CTR in 2004. The news isn't suprising given that we can't remember clicking on a single banner ad in the last few weeks.

But as online advertising models continue to shift towards greater context and relavance, and the technology to faciliate finer targeting continues to improve and evolve, we should start to witness a revival in online display CTR.

Advertisers need to move away from seeing online as a 'push' medium and there needs to be greater acceptance of the fact that consumers are in control online.

Other research has shown that fully blown video ads tend to have better CTRs (around 4%) when compared to their animated GIF or Flash counterparts.
